Google Doodles
Championing Google’s Values Through Illustration & Animation
The Challenge:
Google needs to connect with their massive audience in a way that cuts through the noise and champions their commitment to innovation, culture, and the arts.
And since every Doodle tells a different story, each one benefits from having a unique visual aesthetic to maximize its impact. This requires a highly dynamic creative process that consistently delivers on-brand content while being flexible enough adapt to any subject matter and style.
The Solution:
Become an art style and subject matter chameleon! I developed flexible illustration systems for international day doodles and current events that needed a high-volume of illustration or needed to change based on live outcomes. For the Copa América Doodles series I created a visual language and system that adapted to every possible tournament result.
For the 2015 Holiday Series, I dug deep to find common denominators between various winter holiday celebrations across the globe, tapping into the universal humanity and heart shared by all. I ended up using a cut-paper aesthetic inspired by Mary Blair and Alexander Girard.
Tapping into the universal humanity and heart behind each doodle.
For the International Day doodles I worked with colleagues globally to gather local context—insuring each doodle delivered big impact while staying sensitive to current issues and cross-cultural interpretation.
The Impact:
Authentic emotional connection between Google and users around the world. The scalable illustration systems ensured seamless production for high-stakes events, and interactive designs like the Clara Rockmore Theremin Doodle deepened user engagement and fostered lasting connections.
